A while back, I caught on Showtime the Bon Jovi documentary, “When We Were Young.” The band Bon Jovi has been around for over 25 years and has achieved worldwide commercial success. The message that I heard throughout this documentary from everyone that was interviewed – Jon, the band members, managers, business colleagues – is about Jon Bon Jovi’s vision. His vision is responsible for creating the success they’re experiencing today.
Success isn’t something that happens haphazardly. You need to know what direction you are taking in order to get there. Think about when you are driving from point A to point B. If you know how to get to point B then the trip is quick and easy. If you don’t, well it could end up taking you a much longer, frustrating period of time to get there.
When I first started out in business, I’ll admit I didn’t spend a lot of time setting goals. At that time I’d achieved my big goal – I was out of corporate and running my own business. Then after a couple of years of flat growth, I realized that I hadn’t set forth a new goal to work towards. I had become entrenched in the busy details of working IN my business instead of ON my business. There was no vision to carry me forward.
So I want to ask you – What vision do you have for your freelance bookkeeping business?
Without goals you’re working from a reactive position. Goals allow you to proactively achieve something. But it’s not enough to set goals. You also need a strategy for making them happen. Earlier, I’ve talked about my strategy and system for accomplishing goals.
I’ve formulated it into this equation: “I will (goal + performance measure) by (specific actions).”
Goal planning is an essential element of achieving the success you desire. Spend some time creating your vision of where you want to be next week, next month or next year. When you start with the end in mind, your path to getting there becomes much shorter!
